NATIONAL SOLEMN ASSEMBLY
Today marks the celebration of the Jewish New Year known as Rosh Hashanah. Biblically it is the Feast of Trumpets (See Leviticus 23). This commences a period of ten days leading to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement – the most holy day in the Jewish calendar. This day prefigured and is fulfilled in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus, the Messiah, on the cross. The days just prior to this –Sat 26 / Sun 27 Sept – have been chosen for a National Day of Solemn Assembly in Australia to pray for our nation to turn to the Lord and for the removal of the Covid virus.
President of the National Council of Churches -Bishop Philip Huggins –has called for this Assembly and invited Ps Peter Walker and Aboriginal Christian Elders to lead this Solemn Assembly, called according to Joel Chapter Two and 2 Chron 7:14.
This is a historic and profoundly important event for our nation as different national prayer movements unite at this critical time for Australia and the world to cry out to God. Please seriously consider setting aside time for earnest prayer on either or both of these days or joining the gathering on zoom for part of the time. (Details below).

Church News

This weekend we approach Fathers’ Day. However, the day’s focus is probably overshadowed by anticipation of the Premier’s announcement about the Covid restrictions and hopes for their easing. This aside, the Diocese project director for Prevention of Violence Against Women-PVAW, Robyn Boosey, in her Fathers’ Day reflection in the

TMA article

‘Breaking Free from Male Stereotypes’ speaks of the damage done to men by the shallow images of masculinity reflected in greeting cards and TV ads. These  fall far short of the range of attributes and emotions which men bring to the role of fathering and to their relationships.
This accompanying

short video

offers a more wholistic and realistic picture of dads. It suggests that affirmation of the variety of characteristics men bring to being who God made them to be is necessary to free men from the pressure of fitting unreal stereotypes and the social and emotional issues that spring from that.
Jesus remains the most amazing and healthy model of manhood. In his utter dependence on God and his unpretencious love and healing for those who others ignored and rejected, Jesus showed us how to live.

This Sunday Jeff Andrews brings us a thought provoking message from Isaiah 55 on the character of our Heavenly Father with inspiring reflection on how we can follow in our Father’s footsteps.

 VALE BETTY A
A much loved member of our 8.30 congregation, Betty A, passed away in the Lord on Friday 28 August, aged 84. Betty’s health rapidly declined after a recent diagnosis of liver cancer. Betty had migrated to Australia from England in 1958 and been in constant secretarial work, especially in the medical field. In retirement she was a long time secretary of U3A in Moorabbin and frequently travelled overseas. She also enjoyed organising social events at Lexington Gardens where she resided. Betty was a very active and cheery person, always looking immaculate and ready with a friendly word. Her living relatives are a niece and nephew in England and in Australia she is mourned by neighbours and friends at Lexington Gardens and close friends of nearly 60 years – Iris and Bruce. Betty has been part of CCD for nearly 20 years and deeply valued the worship life of this community. It is intended that a memorial service take place in Betty’s honour when restrictions are sufficiently lifted. Rest in peace faithful sister as you await the resurrection call of your Lord and Saviour upon his return.

God is at work among us!

Have you noticed – prayers answered for those undergoing surgery and treatments; Jill’s mushrooming community enterprise feeding those in need; others finding boldness and opportunity to share their faith in response to Greg’s recent stirring message and others volunteering service to the community?
God is stirring us to prayer; to compassionate action and enlarging our faith. How are you experiencing the stirring of God’s Spirit at present in your life? What is God directing your spirit, your thoughts and prayers toward? What next step might you take in response? Ring a friend and share your thoughts, praying together for God’s guidance or discernment and boldness. Be sure of this – God is frequently speaking to you. Often it is simply through a need or opportunity that presents itself to you. As we begin each day with a simple prayer of inviting God to direct our path that day trust that he is doing so and then be ready…
Eph 5: ‘Be filled with the Spirit…’ ‘…making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil.’

Hope in Anxious Times

As I prepare for Sunday morning’s service with Isaiah 35 and read the vivid and dramatic promises of God through the prophet, I reflect on how many years so many of these promises waited for their fulfilment. There were often layers to the prophecies, some relating to contemporary political events and military threats, some projecting decades ahead and others centuries, speaking of the One who was to come. What faith this called for from God’s people! How could they endure? How could they hold onto their hope?
It was certainly not by focussing on their circumstances, nor on the apparent delay in the answer. Their focus had to be the character of God who made these promises and who had shown his faithfulness time and again in the past. Ish 33:5-6 ‘The Lord is exalted for he dwells on high; …He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure.
When all else appears empty, unyielding, or greatly perplexing, dig deep into God and into his Word.
Let him become the centre of your focus, devotion and hope. He has predicted that the earth will be shaken so we ought not be surprised when this occurs. And he has revealed why: so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Hebs 12:27. Ally yourself to what cannot be shaken, Allow whatever idols that may have crept into your affections to be exposed for the pretenders that they are. Fear the Lord. He is your one and only safe place – the sure foundation for our times – and your truest treasure.

church news

God is alive and well.

The ever-present awareness and cloud of the virus in no way extinguishes God’s power, love and faithfulness.
The following testimony has been provided by John Lansdowne with the request that it be shared with the whole congregation.

To the CCD congregation:
In February last year, there was a tumour the size of a man’s fist in the top of my right lung. The past eighteen months of my life have been pervaded by the cloud of lung cancer. I sought prayer for healing and God heard and acted. He appointed skilled, kind and caring physicians, He provided these physicians with access to effective treatments, He gave me the support of my ever loving wife, and He gave me hope.
Scans conducted on 31st July 2020 show that there is no cancer. I’m healed; my entire body is cancer free.
I wish to take this opportunity to proclaim what God has done.
I wish to thank you, the CCD folk for your support and for your faithful prayers. The prayer blanket created by Janet and added to by many, comforts me during the night. Thank you
John Lansdowne

The words of Isaiah (60:1-3) in this context are apt ‘Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.’ Now is not a time for shrinking back or hiding away (though rightly observing physical distance and isolation as required). It is a time for confidently affirming and declaring God’s goodness amid any and every situation that life throws our way. Praise the Lord, O my soul. Forget not all his benefits! Ps 103

CHURCH NEWS

Where do you find your Hope?

What a privilege that in the midst of constantly changing restrictions and circumstances we are indwelt by the God of hope. I heard a quote yesterday from theologian Jurgen Moltmann who reasoned that since God is the God of the future as well as the past and present, he is in the future ahead of us, and he goes with us into the future. So, full of uncertainty as the future may be for us now, God has it and us in hand. He is there to greet us in it, as well as accompanying us on the way toward it.
Paul writes of this hope: ‘I pray that God, who is the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.’ Roms 15:13

And this hope is not for ourselves alone…

John Pilbrow has contributed the following scripture and thought for our reflection.
But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.    (Jeremiah 29:7)
What this speaks to me [John] is that we pray for everyone, particularly at this time. As Christians we are required to do our bit for the benefit of all. In other words, we Christians are not to think of ourselves as a sort of protected enclave. We’re all in this together!

Please join in the following prayer…

Our Bishop’s Covid 19 Prayer

 O God our heavenly Father,
Your son, the Lord Jesus Christ, is the Great Physician, who healed the sick, cured the blind and deaf and raised the dead, and who, throughout all history, holds dominion over disease and death:
In your mercy to this world, arrest and eradicate this coronavirus. Heal the afflicted and comfort those who have suffered from this scourge; so that those who suffer may know your healing heart and hand, that those who are anxious or burdened may know your comfort and peace that passes understanding, that the watching world may know your sovereign authority, prevailing power, mercy, and grace, and that all may come to know, love and worship you; we ask in the name of Jesus, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

CHURCH OFFICE CLOSED BUT STAFF ACTIVE – ONLINE AND PHONE

With Stage 4 restrictions no staff are permitted to work from the church office, nor anyone be on site for any reason. That means no drop offs of any goods or any gardening work. Permitted exceptions are the staff team of no more than five people pre-recording the weekly service on Thursday afternoons and the essential service provided by Emergency Resources on Wednesdays.
Staff will all be available, however, working from home at their usual times on mobile phone and email. Mairead works Mon, Weds and Lisette: Tues, Thurs and have access to office email. Tanya’s day off is Sat and Wayne’s is Friday.
Currently our talented admin staff – Lisette and Mairead – are busy implementing a new online Church Management System that will greatly improve the storing and accessibility of information for staff and ministry leaders as well as congregation, integrating all data and info systems into one place with increased capacity for innovation.

Tanya is focussed on getting the new zoom service happening this month alongside her prolific pastoral contact, EHS group and preaching duties.

Wayne is organising the follow up course-Emotionally Healthy Relationships -planned for Term 4 – as well as facilitating two current EHS groups. Communication with staff and leaders is constant for us both and admin is always demanding attention. One project most will be unaware of is major repair to our downstairs meeting area which was damaged by a blocked toilet overflow brought on by the freeway works nearby. Their insurance will cover all costs. Carpet and contaminated plaster has been removed, hygiene testing done and builders will soon be on site commencing repair work.

Josie has all the finance numbers doing her bidding and Baden is keeping the youth and children engaged on Friday nights (yth) and Sundays (kids). Don’t miss Baden at his creative best on youtube this Sunday and Tanya has put in another ripper of a message for this Sunday from John 15:1-17.
And the amazing Jessica has produced a brand new CCD website design ripe to launch. Watch this space!

New Zoom Praise & Prayer Service with Holy Communion.

As mentioned last week, it is planned to commence an informal service of Praise and Prayer via Zoom on the fourth Sunday of each month and you are warmly invited to be part of it!

This will start on Sunday 23 August at 5pm. It will incorporate live worship and invite interaction in the sharing of prophetic words and testimony. A link will be provided in that week’s email and all are welcome. The service will aim to run for an hour. Please pray for Tanya as she gathers a team for this new service and feel free to contact Tanya to help or for further details.

Covid Considerations and Zoom

We are exploring different ways for us to meet for worship in addition to our Sunday pre-recording. We are also considering bringing people together in various groupings to just connect and catch up with each other. All this presumes the ability to do so online, with Zoom seeming to be the most accessible vehicle for this to happen.
I would like to recommend that those who have not yet done so, please install zoom on your computer or device. It is free and is easily found via Google. Just follow the prompts or ring someone for help. This will enable us to initiate interactive ways for us to meet and to worship.

Marriage Course

A great opportunity to strengthen your marriage is the Alpha Marriage Course. Over seven Monday nights online, starting 3 August you are welcome to join locally well-known Baptist Pastor Bill Brown and his wife Julia for this highly recommended marriage ‘in-service’. Details here.

Tanzania Covid Appeal Update

It is exciting to see this appeal continue to creep up. It now stands at $13,975! Thank you for your generosity, which is shared by the people of Craigieburn and other ARDFA supporters. Please pray for further momentum to reach our goal of $25000 and pray for Mecka and his Covid strategy team in their work of education and prevention of the spread of this disease. You can give here.

MADDV – Serving those in need in Dingley
Thankfully, there is somewhere to go for those doing it hard during Covid.
Financial assistance can be received through Make a Difference, Dingley Village. However, Marion of MADDV is desperate for volunteers to assist her in this work as volunteer numbers have recently reduced.
The work is safe as distancing and masks are mandatory. If you have availability of a Weds morning between 9-11 for one day a month or fortnight and would like the joy of making a difference in the lives of people in need, please contact Marion on 0429857509. Thank you!
Thank you too for those continuing to provide Long Life milk for weekly distribution by MADDV. Why not make 4 cartons of milk a regular part of your shopping list as a $5 investment to bless someone in need? God bless you, kind people of CCD.

Prayers
We give thanks for the testimony to Jesus of EH’s life and pray for R and his family in their loss. Please also pray for JS in hospital for tests and operation on a torn shoulder ligament following a fall today. Pray for E, giving thanks that she is home, and pray for the return of strength to her legs in a way that lasts. Continue praying for complete healing and recovery for C, A, JH, J, P and S. Pray for God’s comfort for N and grace upon her witness to the people of her retirement village in great need of Jesus as she has requested.
This Sunday’s Service
This Sunday Tanya brings us another riveting message on a topic that is deceptively simple, yet life changing for those game enough to put it into practice. Chp 6 of the Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Course is ‘Discover the Rhythm of the Daily Office and Sabbath’. Have your bible ready with Daniel 6:6-10 and Exodus 20:1-17 with an openness to hear from God and joyfully obey!

God bless you and ‘see’ you Sunday.

Wayne and Tanya and the staff at CCD.
